My father said nothing.

My mother suddenly began crying.
Vanessa stared at her.
“Mom?”
My mother lowered her head.
Grandma looked at her.

Grandma continued explaining.

My father stood.

She tapped the documents.
“She was right.”

“Were they illegal?”

Vanessa suddenly began crying.

Grandma looked at her.
“Everything.”
She reached for another document.
“Your father believed that once I died, control of the company would eventually pass to him.”
My father stared at the table.
“But eighteen months ago, I changed my estate plan.”
She looked at Lily.
“I created a protected trust for her.”
My daughter was still holding my hand.
“She doesn’t understand what any of this means,” I said.
“She doesn’t need to,” Grandma replied.
“The trust will protect her until she’s old enough to make her own decisions.”
I nodded slowly.
“And me?”
“You are the trustee.”
My father suddenly laughed bitterly.
“You’re giving him control?”

“I’m giving him responsibility.”
