I looked down.

A provision Dad had insisted on before our wedding.
If Ethan attempted to transfer, sell, borrow against, or claim ownership of assets belonging to me or my family without authorization, every financial arrangement connecting him to Whitmore Holdings would immediately terminate.
His company.
His credit facilities.
His investment agreements.
Everything.
I looked at Dad.
“He knew this?”
“He signed it.”
“And he never read it?”
Dad gave me a sad smile.
“He was too busy celebrating what he thought he was gaining.”
The next morning, Ethan came to the house.
He didn’t apologize.
He didn’t ask about Noah.
He demanded to see me.
When I walked into the foyer, he was standing beside the door.
“Claire, we need to talk.”
“We’re done.”
His face tightened.
“You’re seriously throwing away our marriage over twelve dollars?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He waited.
“The twelve dollars didn’t end my marriage.”
I took a breath.
“They showed me what was left of it.”
His expression changed.
“You need me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand how much I’ve built.”
I looked at the papers Mr. Reynolds had left on the table.
“You built it with money you thought you could eventually take from me.”
“That isn’t true.”
“Then why were you trying to sell my father’s properties?”
Silence.
He had no answer.
Finally, I turned toward the door.
Ethan stopped me.
“Claire.”
I looked back.
He was crying now.
But I didn’t feel the urge to comfort him.

“Your father always hated me,” he whispered.
I shook my head.
“My father gave you every opportunity to succeed.”
I paused.
“You were the one who decided my family was something you could exploit.”
Ethan left.
Three weeks later, his company collapsed after the investment agreements were terminated.
The SUV was returned to my driveway.
The house remained mine.
And the twelve dollars?
I put them in a small frame.

Months later, Dad called me into his study.
He handed me another envelope.

I opened it.

I looked at Dad.
“Why didn’t you show me this before?”
His expression was heavy.

I looked down at Noah, sleeping peacefully in my arms.
