“You just told me you did all of this for him.”

“I did.”

“Then how can you simply let it go?”

I closed the spreadsheet.

“Because Dad is gone, Patricia.”

The sentence left both of us quiet.

For three years, I had avoided saying it that directly.

“He is gone,” I repeated. “And I can’t continue paying twelve thousand dollars every month to preserve a building for people who consider my presence there an inconvenience.”

“You gave me a deadline.”
