“The estate operating account is essentially empty after this month’s expenses.”

Her breathing quickened.

“What about the mortgage?”

“The next payment is due.”

“When?”

“Today.”

Canton said something in the background that I couldn’t understand.

Patricia lowered her voice.

“You need to pay it.”

“No.”

“This is your father’s house.”

“It was my father’s house.”
“You just told me you did all of this for him.”

“I did.”

“Then how can you simply let it go?”

I closed the spreadsheet.

“Because Dad is gone, Patricia.”

The sentence left both of us quiet.

For three years, I had avoided saying it that directly.

“He is gone,” I repeated. “And I can’t continue paying twelve thousand dollars every month to preserve a building for people who consider my presence there an inconvenience.”

“Carla, I was upset on Tuesday.”

“You gave me a deadline.”

“I didn’t know about the finances.”

“That isn’t the same as being forced into making the decision.”

“We can change the arrangement.”

I nearly smiled.

“What arrangement?”

“You can move back.”

“No.”

“You can keep your room.”

“My room?”

“The main bedroom.”

“How generous.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Make me sound awful.”

“I’m simply repeating what you offered.”

Her voice tightened.

“Canton doesn’t have seventy-five hundred dollars.”

“That sounds like something Canton should have considered before scheduling a moving truck.”

“He believed the house was secure.”

“So did you.”

Melanie said something in the background.

Then Canton took the phone again.

“Okay. Everyone needs to calm down.”

I leaned back.

“I am calm.”

“We can work this out.”
