PART 1 — THE LOCK HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE CHANGED
After fourteen hours at work, I returned to find my suitcase, clothes, laptop bag, three pairs of shoes, confidential work files, and my grandparents’ framed photo scattered across the twenty-ninth-floor hallway of Cloudview Towers. My key no longer fit the new silver lock, installed sometime between 8 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. Michael had changed the locks on the condo I legally owned. “Cloudview Towers, Unit 2902, Chicago,” I told the dispatcher.
She asked whether I lived there.
“Yes.”

“My husband.”

“Michael? Who’s at the door?”

“My condo.”

For once, he said something that sounded almost reasonable.
“If you were unhappy in our marriage, you could have talked to me.”
“I tried.”
“No. You complained.”

“What does that mean?”

Michael pulled out the chair across from me.
“I tried talking to you.”

“I should have listened better,” I said.

“Your mother’s note?”
Michael reached for the page.
“What?”
