Colleagues praised him.

Hospital administrators invited him to conferences and ceremonies.

At home, however, Marcus had become increasingly distant.

The nurse asked, “Is your husband on his way?”

I whispered, “He’s a surgeon here.”

“Oh.”

I was on the seventeenth floor.

I defended him anyway.

I shook my head.

I didn’t understand what she meant.

“Even when nobody asked you to be.”

I was discharged that afternoon.

I changed into my clothes, packed the few belongings I’d accumulated, and slowly walked downstairs.

Marcus was waiting near the hospital entrance.

For one ridiculous second, my heart jumped.

Maybe he had finally come.

Maybe he would put his arms around me and say he was sorry.

I nodded.

The physician was Marcus.

That couldn’t be right.

I had never told him about severe abdominal pain.

I’d mentioned feeling sick.

He had told me it was probably stress.

But the note contained something else.

A specific recommendation.

“Patient should avoid delaying evaluation if symptoms progress.”

I stared at the sentence.

Why would Marcus write that?

I kept reading.

Then I found an entry from the day before my appendix ruptured.

Marcus had documented that I had complained of increasing pain.

I hadn’t.

At least, not to him.

Someone had apparently spoken to him about my symptoms.

I called the hospital’s medical-records department.

The woman on the phone hesitated.

She checked.

My stomach tightened.

Marcus had.

I couldn’t breathe.

I felt sick.

He claimed he’d been trying to protect me.

I looked at him quietly.
