I nearly laughed.

“Why does that matter?”

Mom exhaled sharply.

I looked through the glass doors.
Grandma Evelyn was eating leftover pumpkin pie at nine in the morning while Uncle Raymond cheerfully argued with Peter about football.
“Because nobody asked.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“No. What’s ridiculous is telling people every year that there isn’t enough room, that transportation is too hard, that personalities don’t mix, or that certain relatives will make dinner uncomfortable. I had enough room, so I invited them.”
“You made us look terrible.”
There it was.

Not even I wish we had been there.
“You’re worried about how the pictures looked,” I said.
“I’m worried that twenty relatives now think we deliberately excluded them.”
“You did deliberately exclude them.”
Mom went silent.
Ten minutes after our call ended, Melissa rang.

“You embarrassed me.”
“I served turkey.”
“You knew what you were doing.”
“Yes.”
“At a mansion.”
“It’s a farmhouse.”

He didn’t ask what the house had cost.

“She stayed overnight,” I said.
Dad laughed softly.

“I know.”

“I know.”

I stayed quiet.

The farmhouse had not caused the conflict.

Within fifteen minutes, Uncle Raymond replied.

We’ll be with Claire too.
Melissa called me immediately.
I let it ring twice before answering.
“Did you invite everyone for Christmas?”
“Yes.”
“You did that before I sent my message?”
“Saturday.”
She sounded genuinely offended.
“You knew Christmas Eve is mine.”
I walked through the farmhouse library, where two electricians were measuring outlets for additional holiday lighting.
“Christmas Eve belongs to a date on the calendar, Melissa.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do. I just don’t agree.”
Her breathing changed.
“You’re trying to replace me.”
“No. People asked what I was doing for Christmas. I told them they were welcome.”
“You should have checked with me first.”
“Why?”
“Because I host.”
“You hosted.”

An hour later, Mom arrived at my house without warning.

Mom’s expression tightened.
“I never said you didn’t have a real family.”
“You didn’t need to.”
She stood.
“So this whole Thanksgiving production was revenge?”
“No.”
“You invited every person we left out.”
“Yes.”
“That sounds intentional.”
“It was intentional. That doesn’t make it revenge.”
“Then what was it?”
I thought about Raymond arriving early because he assumed nobody else wanted him around.
I thought about Lena asking three times whether she really could bring her daughter.
I thought about Peter telling me James hadn’t attended a Mercer Thanksgiving in four years.
And I thought about Grandma crying when she saw the ramp.
“It was dinner,” I said. “For people who were tired of being told there wasn’t room.”
Mom looked away.

I nearly dropped my coffee.
“What?”

Dad sighed.

Mom closed her eyes.

Everyone had heard her.
Mom realized it too.

Twenty minutes later, she came back looking exhausted.
Dad handed her a glass of wine without saying anything.
We sat down to dinner.
