My voice broke.

“I searched your bag in the middle of the night.”

After a long silence, he whispered,

“I’m so sorry, Lee.”

“Your computer password was LoonLake.”

He gave a faint laugh.

“I changed it after the diagnosis.”

“Why that?”

“Because I thought if I ever forgot the password, I could ask myself where I most wanted to be.”

He paused.

“And I’d remember the lake.”

I had to pull over for a moment.

I couldn’t see through my tears.

When I finally arrived at the gas station, Mark was sitting in his truck.

The doors were locked, just as I’d instructed.

He looked toward my car.

For one awful second, I feared he might not recognize me.

And somewhere between the gas pumps, my husband wrapped his arms around me and held me so tightly I could barely breathe.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I should have told you.”

I pressed my face against his shoulder.

“Yes. You should have.”

He began crying harder.

“I didn’t want you to see me differently.”

I pulled back.

“What?”

“I didn’t want you watching every little thing I forgot. Every word. Every set of keys. I didn’t want to see that expression on your face.”

“What expression?”

He looked at me.

“That one.”

I realized I must have looked terrified.

And heartbroken.

“Mark,” I whispered, “I’m looking at you like this because I love you, and you frightened me.”

He rested his forehead against mine.

I held him.

For a long time, neither of us said anything.

A stranger walked around us on his way to another car.

We didn’t care.

I drove us home.

Dave agreed to collect Mark’s truck.

When I called, he didn’t sound surprised.

That told me he already knew.

During the drive, Mark explained that he’d told his fishing friends about the diagnosis in June.

He needed their help arranging the second wedding.

Dave had driven him to the jeweler.

Tommy had helped with the hotel reservation.

Ray had been assigned to post plenty of fishing photographs so I wouldn’t suspect anything.

I told Mark about the breakfast picture.

“Ray photographed three of you while your untouched pancakes sat on the table.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Of course he did.”

For a moment, we both laughed.

Then I asked about Carol.

He explained that she’d owned the Gull’s Nest for thirty years.

Before it became a café, the building had been a bait shack.

It was beside the same dock where he’d told me he intended to marry me.

He’d called Carol to reserve the deck.

And somehow, he’d ended up telling her everything.

When she learned why he wanted the wedding there, she’d offered to organize the gathering at cost.

“She cried on the phone,” he said.

I thought about her voice.

*Oh, honey.*

Now I understood.

She hadn’t been pitying me because my husband was unfaithful.

She’d been heartbroken because he was ill.

And she’d assumed I already knew.

I sat quietly for a while.

Then asked,

“Does Sophie know?”

Mark shook his head.

“No.”

His voice trembled.

“I couldn’t figure out how to tell her.”

“We’ll tell her together.”

He turned toward me.

“Are you angry?”

I stared ahead at the road.

“Yes.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I’m furious, actually. You’ve known for five months. You went to appointments alone. You lied about seeing the dentist. You let me believe everything was fine.”

“I know.”

“And I’m probably going to be angry for a while.”

He nodded.

Then I reached across the console and took his hand.

“But I’m also going to be here.”

He looked at me.

“For the appointments. The difficult days. Everything.”

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to carry this alone anymore, Mark. Not one more day.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

## Part 4: One More Wedding

We told Sophie that Saturday.

She drove home from university, and we sat together at the kitchen table.

Mark tried reading from an index card he’d prepared.

But his hands shook too much.

So I explained the diagnosis while he held our daughter’s hand.

At first, Sophie didn’t cry.

She asked questions.

Detailed nursing-student questions.

About treatment.

Memory testing.

Medical evaluations.

What the doctors expected.

She wrote down the answers carefully.

Then, suddenly, she stopped.

She set down her pen.

Looked at her father.

And whispered,

“Daddy?”

She hadn’t called him Daddy in years.

Then she started crying.

Mark pulled her into his arms.

He held her the way he’d held her when she was little.

“I’ve still got good days ahead, sweetheart,” he whispered.

“I’ll be there when you graduate.”

He smiled through his tears.

“And someday, I’m going to embarrass you at your wedding with terrible jokes.”

“You’d better,” Sophie whispered.

We all knew the future was uncertain.

But for that moment, we let ourselves hope.

Eventually, Sophie wiped her eyes.

Then she glanced at me.

“Mom mentioned a folder with a ring on it.”

Mark looked embarrassed.

I squeezed his hand.

He drew a breath.

“I’m planning to marry your mother again.”

Sophie blinked.

“What?”

“September twentieth. At Loon Lake.”

He smiled.

“And I need your help finding her a dress. If I choose it, she’ll never forgive me.”

For a moment, Sophie simply stared.

Then she laughed through her tears.

“You enormous romantic idiot!”

She threw her arms around him.

And for the first time since I’d discovered his diagnosis, our kitchen was filled with laughter.

The following weeks were both beautiful and difficult.

We visited Mark’s neurologist together.

Dr. Patel explained the condition and the care plan.

She discussed medication, routines, memory supports, and ways to make our home safer.

We began labeling things.

Putting reminders on a whiteboard.

Keeping a clear calendar.

And making sure important contact information was always accessible.

After the incident on Route 9, Dr. Patel told Mark he could no longer drive.

That was devastating for him.

He’d been driving since he was fifteen.

His grandfather had taught him on dirt roads near Loon Lake.

On the way home, Mark stared silently at his truck parked beside the garage.

That night, he placed the keys in my hand.

Exactly the way he’d handed me his wedding ring twelve years earlier.

“I’m sorry, Lee,” he whispered. “I just can’t.”

I held his hand.

“That’s okay, sweetheart.”

He looked at me.

“It’s only a truck. You’re still you. That’s what matters.”

His eyes filled.

Then he held me.

A week later, I called Carol.

She answered with that same familiar, gravelly voice.

“Well, honey. Did you find what you were looking for?”

“I did.”

I hesitated.

“And I’m sorry I hung up on you.”

She laughed softly.

“Don’t worry about that. I’d probably have done the same.”

We talked about Mark.

About the wedding.

About the arrangements she’d made.

And about how frightening the previous few days had been.

When I mentioned that Mark had driven north toward Loon Lake during his moment of confusion, she grew quiet.

“Toward here?” she asked.

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Well, maybe some part of him was trying to find his favorite place.”

I looked out the window.

Perhaps she was right.

In early September, Sophie took me dress shopping.

I insisted I didn’t need anything elaborate.

I was fifty-one.

I’d already worn a wedding dress once.

But Sophie refused to let me settle for something ordinary.

“Mom, Dad wants this day to be special.”

“He thinks khakis count as formal clothing.”

“Exactly. That’s why he’s letting me choose.”
