I could hardly speak.

“But why would they keep making the payments?”

Marcus studied me carefully.

My thoughts raced backward.

Four years earlier, Dad had needed financial support.

Megan spoke quietly.

“Brent told me it was key-person insurance for the company.”

“I don’t work for that company.”

“I know.”

Suddenly, every unfamiliar document I had signed for Dad over the years seemed important.

Medical authorization forms. Insurance paperwork. Financial documents.

Had those signatures been misused too?

Marcus examined the policy.

“This makes the situation more serious.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

“Using someone’s identity is one issue.

Financial misrepresentation is another.

But an insurance application containing false information can potentially involve additional investigators and regulators.”

The room became completely quiet.

Then Megan said something that unsettled me even more than the policy.

“Three weeks ago, Brent asked whether you were still driving that old Honda.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“He said it wasn’t very safe.”

“That almost sounds thoughtful.”

“He wasn’t saying it that way.”

Her face became pale.

“He said, ‘Eventually, unsafe things take care of themselves.’”

Marcus strongly advised me to contact law enforcement.

I did.

At first, I felt almost foolish doing it.

Nobody had physically harmed me.

There wasn’t a direct written threat that clearly explained anyone’s intentions.

But investigators treated the financial allegations seriously.

They traced paperwork.

The insurance application hadn’t originated with Brent.

Dad rose from his recliner.

Mom started crying.

Mom covered her mouth.

“Stop.”

Even I was surprised by how firm my voice sounded.

Stop pretending these things simply happened without anyone making decisions.”

Dad stood up.

“Watch how you’re speaking.”

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“No?”

“I spent four years covering your expenses.

You allowed Brent to use my identity.

You let paperwork carry a signature that wasn’t mine.

Property was purchased under my name without my knowledge.

Dad’s settlement went toward financing Brent’s company.

And someone obtained a three-quarter-million-dollar life insurance policy on me.”

Mom cried harder.

“It was never meant to cause you harm.”
“Then tell me what it was supposed to accomplish.”

Nobody answered.

“Tell me.”

Finally, Dad lowered himself back into the chair.

“The company needed collateral.”

“That doesn’t explain the insurance policy.”

Mom looked toward him.

Dad stared down at the floor.

And at that moment, I realized something.

Mom didn’t know the entire story.

“Dad?”

He remained silent.

“Why was there an insurance policy on my life?”

His expression shifted.

There was something he knew.

Then headlights moved across the front windows.

A vehicle pulled into the driveway.

I stared at him.

He dropped his keys onto the table.

“What connections?”

He glanced toward Dad.

Just a brief glance.

But I noticed it.

Dad interrupted sharply, “Brent.”

It was already too late.

Brent laughed.

“You honestly have no idea?”

My heart started racing.

“No idea about what?”

“Dad, why don’t you tell her?”

“Be quiet.”

Brent’s grin grew wider.

“You’ve gone through life believing you were the responsible child.”

Mom whispered, “Brent, please stop.”

He paid no attention.

I stared at him.
