By 5:03 that morning, I was standing in the center of my son’s bare nursery with blood smeared across my hand, shards of glass inside my shoes, and my whole life compressed into a cream-colored note.

For a long while, I stayed completely still.

The house was silent enough that I could hear the heating system clicking inside the walls. Somewhere below, icy air slipped through the shattered kitchen door and drifted through the vacant rooms like an intruder.

I looked down at the photograph on my phone.

My signature.

My exact, carefully repeated signature.
