Sunday lunch was supposed to be an ordinary family gathering. There was a roast on the table, grocery-store rolls in a basket, and my two-year-old daughter Ellie sitting on the kitchen floor beside her three-year-old cousin Cole while the adults talked nearby.

I was cutting strawberries into smaller pieces for Ellie because she had been asking for them all morning. My phone was resting beside the fruit bowl, recording the children playing because I liked saving little moments from this stage of her childhood.

At that age, Ellie reached for everything she found interesting.
