“What are you doing here?” Brenda shouted in the middle of the hospital corridor, her face pale, her hair disheveled, and her blouse hastily buttoned wrong.

People turned to look. Two nurses paused, staring in our direction. I kept my voice strictly level.

Brenda, my husband’s secretary, always showed up at the office looking immaculate: flawless heels, perfect makeup, and a bright, artificial smile. That morning, she looked like a completely different person. And it was no coincidence that I was standing right outside the room of Andrew, her husband.
