I saw the blood on the snow first. Bright red drops, perfectly round, swallowed instantly by the fresh powder as the storm kept raging. They formed a trail up the old porch steps of my late wife’s mountain cabin. And then I saw the two little girls.

They stood pressed against the front door like frightened baby deer. Their bare feet were nearly black from the cold. Their thin coats did nothing against the biting Colorado wind. In their tiny blue hands, they clutched pieces of stale, crumbling bread, holding them tight as if they were made of gold.
