My Stepdad Died and Left Me Nothing but a Lifetime of Silence

My stepdad Walter died three weeks ago. Sudden heart attack at 56. I thought I was prepared for it.

I wasn’t.

The morning Mom called, her voice was so small. “Beth, honey, Walter’s gone. He just collapsed in the garage.” I remember dropping my coffee mug. It shattered on the kitchen floor in my little apartment in Springfield, Ohio, and I just stared at the pieces.

I didn’t cry right away. I just stood there, barefoot, thinking about all the things that would never happen now.

You see, Walter never called me his daughter. Not once in twenty-three years. He never said, “I love you.” I can count on one hand how many times he hugged me, and even those were stiff, brief, like he was checking off a duty. I was Mom’s daughter from her first marriage, and I got that message loud and clear from the time I was five years old.
