The turkey sat carved in the center of the table, cooling under the chandelier. My mother’s cranberry dish trembled slightly where someone had bumped the table. The television murmured from the living room, some commentator talking through crowd noise, absurdly cheerful in the distance. Snow drifted outside the front windows, soft and silent against the dark glass.
