No one finished dinner.

The case moved the way federal cases do: slowly and inexorably. The machine had been set in motion, and no amount of pleading from my parents could stop it.

Over the next weeks and months, my mother called often. Sometimes she cried. Sometimes she was angry. Sometimes she tried bargaining.

“Can’t you tell them it was a misunderstanding? That she thought they were family bonds?”

“She stole them,” I’d say. “She researched how to steal them for two weeks. She told her adviser she wanted maximum returns with no questions asked.”

“She didn’t know they were…government things.”
